New in ObjectStore Enterprise and PSE Pro V7.1

The Progress® ObjectStore® product family continues to evolve to bring you faster, smarter and more reliable data management. Recent features and enhancements made to ObjectStore Enterprise and ObjectStore PSE Pro include:

* These features are only available in ObjectStore Enterprise.

New XPath Facility

The XPath facility provides read-only access to ObjectStore databases. This facility provides two main benefits:

  • It enables you to evaluate an XPath expression against an ObjectStore database. This allows you to navigate through a persistent object graph and to obtain a result set, which you can optionally convert to XML. If you convert the result set to XML, you can represent the XML as either text, DOM, or SAX.
  • It enables you to access persistent objects using a generic property-based API. This API allows you to write an application that works with any ObjectStore database, without having specific knowledge of the database schema. With this API, your application can dynamically discover database schema information at runtime. For example, if you wanted to create a report writing application, your application could leverage this API.

Increased Platform Support

Progress Software is committed to keeping pace with the changing landscape and providing support for new platforms and compilers as they are introduced to the market. We now have support for:

  • Windows Server 2008 (32-bit & 64-bit)
  • Visual Studio .NET 2008 (32-bit & 64-bit)
  • Windows Vista (32-bit & 64-bit)

Plus continued support for Linux, Solaris, AIX,  and HP-UX.

New System Administration Tool

The new Data Services Administrator is a Web-based application that will allow a user to monitor, control and report on executing ObjectStore-related processes. Functions include the ability to stop, start and monitor a currently executing process. Users will be able to extract statistics that are consistent with the existing collection of command-line tools. They will also be able to bring databases online and offline.

This system management application runs in a web browser, supporting the latest available versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox. Management information and controls are exposed through JMX.

Increased JDK 5 Development Support

Now ObjectStore and PSE Pro for Java customers can develop applications with JDK 5. This support goes beyond the JDK 5 runtime support available today. With ObjectStore V7, customers will be able to use these language features of JDK 5:

  • Generics
  • Enhanced For Loop
  • Autoboxing/Unboxing
  • Typesafe Enums
  • Varargs
  • Static Import
  • Annotations

Ability to Run Multiple Instances of ObjectStore

ObjectStore 7.0 delivers the ability to run multiple instances of ObjectStore to run as separate services on Windows platforms. This feature also gives you the option of using a parameter file that contains the various parameters passed in when starting a server or cache manager process on Windows; previously this was available on UNIX only.

Logs Can Now Exceed 2GB in Size

ObjectStore 7.0 now supports transactions logs up to 2 Terabytes in size! This dramatically increases the limit of modified pages in a single transaction, or the amount of supportable delayed writes when using MVCC.

Support for NFS Database Storage

ObjectStore 7.0 now supports databases stored on Network Attached Storage file servers. ObjectStore transaction logs can also be stored on these servers. ObjectStore Release 7.0 has been tested with NetApp FAS3050 running on the Data ONTAP version 7.2.1.1 operating system in an NFS Version 3, NFS Version 4 and CIFS environment. (Available to ObjectStore Enterprise customers only.)

And there's more good news. Migrating to version 7.1 does not require a dump and load of your existing databases! Contact us to learn more.

NOTE: Upgrading existing ObjectStore licenses to ObjectStore 7.1 licenses cannot be done on-line and requires the assistance of Customer Service. Please contact Customer Service at customerservice@progress.com to upgrade existing ObjectStore licenses to version 7.1.
